Mission
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer based tool that allows creating, editing and maintaining data in a digital and spatially referenced format. The capabilities of a GIS are invaluable to Public Works in not only maintaining cartographic quality digital versions of the physical assets that they maintain and build but also provide with significant quantitative and qualitative benefits. Various type of analysis - proximity, adjacency, and buffer can be performed using GIS, other spatial relationships can be identified and the results can be visualized on a map for better understanding. In fact, GIS is becoming critical to decision making in the public interest and its effective communication to the citizens.
The GIS Team in Public Works maintains all the cartographic layers for all the physical features (roads, bridges, base map etc.) and all City owned transportation and other assets (traffic signs, signals etc). The City of Richmond has enterprise architecture and the GIS Team in Public Works functions in that centralized framework for data storage and dissemination. Public Works uses a GIS centric workflow asset management system - Cityworks' which is maintained and implemented by the GIS Team. The GIS Team provides GIS and Cityworks' technical and program support for all Engineering and Operations divisions of the department
