Mission
The Jahnke Road website will be updated continuously throughout the life of the project and provide a format for citizens to remain
informed of project progress. It is our hope that the website will encourage City residents to provide their valuable input for the
planned improvements to the Jahnke Road Corridor between Blakemore Road and Forest Hill Avenue.
Project Goals
We want to improve traffic safety, improve traffic flow and enhance overall livability for the residents and users of the Jahnke
Road Corridor. Jahnke Road not only carries automobile traffic, but also pedestrians, cyclists, GRTC bus riders and
children that attend the three public schools located along the Project corridor.
Important project elements within the design will include bicycle lanes, sidewalks, landscaping and lighting. The existing roadway
drainage will be upgraded from an open system with roadside ditches to a closed system with storm sewer pipe and curb and gutter
which will eliminate areas slow to drain during prolonged periods of heavy rainfall.
Planned Outreach
Activities will provide city residents with meaningful opportunities to affect project outcomes throughout the project. Please
take the opportunity to access the website links and review the first project newsletter (in a series of periodic newsletters) and
information on the upcoming public information meeting. We also encourage citizens to provide initial thoughts, comments and ideas
about the Jahnke Road Improvement Project at any time under the Contact link.
Project Team
Design Consultant Team
The City of Richmond selected CH2M HILL as the prime consultant for the design phase of the Jahnke Road Improvement Project in
December of 2008. CH2M HILL is an engineering firm located within the City of Richmond at 8720 Stony Point Parkway, Suite 110,
Richmond VA 23235. CH2M HILL initiated the project with the mobilization of the design team to begin the information gathering
process of the Jahnke Road Project Corridor. A right-of-entry letter was released to the residents that lived along the Jahnke
Road Corridor in early February 2009 requesting permission to access properties in order to assemble accurate data for project
design.
Additional Information
Project Timeline and Anticipated Construction Schedule
The city of Richmond awarded the Project to CH2M HILL, the design consultant December, 2008.
Planning and design began in early 2009 with initial engineering studies that included surveying, traffic data gathering and analysis, and environmental studies.
The first public information meeting was held in July, 2009 to introduce the Project to the residents of the area and other interested citizens. The meeting was held to obtain feedback on possible design alternatives.
The second public information meeting was held in mid October, 2009. Results from the first and second public information meetings finalized the selection of a preferred alternative to carry forward to final design.
The Public Hearing will introduce the preferred alternative to carry forward to final design. This option is based upon citizen input and feedback from the previous public information meetings, and the results of the preliminary engineering studies.
Next steps will include the completion of final design and the acquisition of any right-of-way or permanent and temporary easement in early 2011.
Project construction is pending based upon receipt of additional funds. Current funding is available for engineering and right-of-way acquisition only.
Traffic Volume and Accident Information
Citizens at the previous public information meetings expressed interest in understanding the existing and future traffic volumes and the number, type and history of accidents that occur on Jahnke Road. The table below summarizes information on the existing and projected traffic counts and accident history from 2005 through 2010 on the project.
Jahnke Road Project Corridor
Traffic Volumes and Accident Information Summarized by Year
| Year | Average Daily Traffic | Accidents |
| 2006 | 12,000 | 38 |
| 2007 | 11,000 | 32 |
| 2008 | 11,000 | 39 |
| 2009 | 12,350 | 26 |
| 2010 | 12,350 | 17 |
| 2030 | 17,350 | |
Traffic volumes are measured as Average Daily Traffic (ADT), which is the number of vehicles passing thru the Jahnke Road Project
Corridor during a 24 hour period. Counts for 2006 through 2008 were provided by Virginia Department of Transportation
From 2006 through September 2010, there were a total of 152 accidents with the largest increase seen at the intersection of Jahnke Road and
Blakemore Road.
