SOLID WASTE DIVISION ELMINATING FRIDAY COLLECTION

Beginning July 9, 2012 the Division of Solid Waste is moving from a 5 day work week, to a 4 day (10 hours per day) work week. There will be no more Friday trash collection after Friday, July 6, 2012.

Also, beginning June 1, 2012, City residents will be able to come to this area of the City website, key in their address, and find out their trash pick-up day.

Each household or small business that is impacted by the change will receive a sticker like this on their supercan indicating the new trash pick-up day, Monday thru Thursday.

The changes will help us be more efficient and/or will help the City save money by:

  • Reducing or collection routes from 113 to 90
  • Allow refuse truck to be serviced on Friday, when crews are off
  • Eliminate a large amount of overtime pay
  • Reduce accidents and injuries (since trucks are out 4 days instead of 5)
  • Reduce mandatory Saturday collection (except during emergencies)

So, be on the lookout:

Mission

Residential trash is collected once per week in the city of Richmond. Supercans must be placed out by 6 a.m. the day of collection to ensure pick-up. The city recommends that you put yard debris, such as leaves, in biodegradable plastic or paper bags, so they can be recycled. We will remove up to 6 bags of leaves during your weekly trash collection. Please call the city's Customer Care Center at 3-1-1 to find out what day collection occurs at your address or refer to the Trash Pickup Map.

City Revises Bulk and Brush Refuse Collection

The city is revising its procedure for bulk and brush refuse collection. Beginning January 17, 2011, bulk and brush refuse collections will be performed by area: northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest, rather than the current zip code method. Each area will have a truck assigned to remove bulk and brush refuse items Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

City residents are required to call the Customer Care Center at 3-1-1 or (804) 646-7000 to request a pick up. Items must be placed out for collection on the day the call is made. There is a $50 service fee for the removal of appliances and a $100 service fee for same day service bulk and brush emergency pick up. Non-emergency bulk and brush pick up will be collected within ten working days of the request with no service fee. If applicable, the service fees will be applied to the resident’s utility bill.

City residents can dispose of appliances; bulk and brush refuse items for free by taking them to the East Richmond Road Convenience Center, 3800 E. Richmond Road, or the Southside Transfer Station, 3520 N. Hopkins Road.

Bulk and Brush Collection Areas

Refuse & Recycling

City Ordinance 2007-230-275, which was approved by City Council in November of 2007, allows receptacles to be placed on city property or in the public right-of-way no earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day prior to collection and requires the receptacles be removed by 7:00 a.m. the day after collection.

The city of Richmond will issue warnings for refuse and recycling receptacles left in the public right of way outside of specified collection times. The trash and recycling receptacles used by Richmond residents and businesses will be subject to these warnings. The city's Department of Public Works will place yellow warning stickers on receptacles that must be removed.

Leaving receptacles on public sidewalks, alleys, roads and other city property isn't just unsightly, it also creates unsafe conditions for pedestrians and vehicles. Please help keep these areas attractive and safe by removing your receptacles outside of the specified collection times.
